Pre-Meet Schedule of Events

Sunday, May 14                           Last day to qualify for regionals.  Last day to qualify for national championship meet in the 10,000 and combined events.

Tuesday, May 16                         Deadline for POP submission, 1 p.m. Eastern time.  POP forms submitted after 1 p.m. Eastern time will be accepted as LATE and the institution will be fined $25 per form.

Wednesday, May 17                  The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee will post declaration forms online (www.ncaa.org/champsadmin/trackandfield/) for all institutions whose student-athletes meet regional qualifying standards or are conference champions, regardless of position on the descending order lists, by 1 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, May 17.

                                                                Coaches with questions about athletes appearing or not appearing on the list must e-mail Bob Podkaminer at rpodkam@aol.com.

Wednesday, May 17 -               Coaches will have access to their declaration form beginning no later

Saturday, May 20                 than 5 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, May 17 and can make changes up to the deadline of 2 p.m. Eastern time, Saturday, May 20. All student-athletes must be declared or scratched on the declaration form in every event in which they qualify. There is no reason to list preferences on the regional declaration form because athletes must compete in all of their declared events. Declaration forms or changes submitted after the 2 p.m. Eastern time deadline and prior to 5 p.m. Eastern time, will be accepted as late and the institution will be fined $300. There is no opportunity to submit declaration forms after 5 p.m. Eastern time, May 20. All athletes not declared by their institution will be scratched from regional competition. Coaches do not declare their 10,000-meter or combined event athletes prior to regionals. They must declare these athletes for the national championship meet after the conclusion of the regional competition and prior to the 1 p.m. Monday, May 29 deadline.

Scratching an athlete from any event, for any reason at any point after the declaration deadline (5 p.m. ET, Saturday, May 21) eliminates the athlete from regional competition and from advancing to the national championship meet in any event contested at regionals.

Thursday, May 18                      Challenge period ends, 4 p.m. Eastern time.  Challenges must be emailed to Bob Podkaminer (rpodkam@aol.com).  Podkaminer emails coaches’ packet information to regional hosts.

Saturday, May 20                      Close of online declarations.  The deadline is 2:00 pm Eastern Time.

Sunday, May 21                           The final list of student-athletes who have been declared in each regional championship will be posted on the NCAA Web site (www.ncaa.org/champsadmin/trackand field) by midnight, Eastern time, Sunday, May 21.

Monday, May 22                         Final notice of scratches for those ill or injured must be submitted to the committee by 3 p.m. Eastern time, Monday, May 23. All scratches must be e-mailed to Bob Podkaminer (email only: rpodkam@aol.com). Failure to notify Mr. Podkaminer may result in a $200 fine.

Coaches DO NOT need to submit POP forms for marks established at the regional championship meets. The NCAA will update any improved marks from regional events. Coaches should review their athletes’ marks on the final descending order list posted by 10 p.m (Eastern time), Sunday, May 28.

Sunday, May 28-                         Online declarations for national championship meet will be

Coaches WILL NOT have the opportunity to make adjustments to the declaration form after it is submitted.

Regional Championship Meet Information

Championship Information

Awards                              The top 5 finishers in each individual event, the top 3 finishers in each relay event, and the top four teams will be recognized on the awards stand near the finish line.  No actual awards will be given at the regional championship.

Bib Numbers                 Athletes must wear both numbers (the smaller of the two on the front, the larger of the two on the back).  Athletes competing in the high jump and/or pole vault may wear one number of either the front or the back.  Hip numbers will be assigned to all runners during the check-in procedure at the pavilion.  Numbers cannot be altered in any fashion.

Coach’s Seating           The first row of each set of bleachers will be reserved for coaches. 

Credentials               CREDENTIAL POLICY: Pursuant to NCAA Bylaw 11.7.4, single gender programs are limited to THREE Head/Assistant Coaches and ONE Volunteer Coach. Combined gender programs are limited to SIX Head/Assistant Coaches and TWO Volunteer Coaches. Please note that each institution can use the services of ONE volunteer coach (to coach both genders) limited to coaching pole vault. Institutions will receive credentials based on the above policy without exceptions.

In addition, one team manager and one administrator may receive a credential.

Each institution will be allowed one additional pass if a medical trainer or physician is accompanying the team. The medical credential will be administered by the host agency’s sports medicine staff.

Loss of a credential will result in the institution paying up to the cost of an all session ticket to the championship for a replacement. If a member of an institutional official travel party gives their NCAA issued credential to a third party, the privileges associated with the credential will be revoked, no replacement credential will be provided, and the institution will be charged with a misconduct by the committee.

The credential will be your admission ticket to the event.  The credential will also allow coaches and administrators into the hospitality area.

Dressing Facilities    There are no dressing facilities at the outdoor track.  If you are in need of a locker room, we can make arrangements for a locker room in the Smith Fieldhouse.  If you have this need, please contact Matthew Nix at 801-422-3304.

Drop-Off Zone              Heavy equipment may be dropped off at the east end of the track.  Vehicles must then go to the designated parking area at the football stadium.

Equipment                     Any legal baton may be used.  Meet management will have batons available for those teams needing one. Only starting blocks provided by meet management may be used. 3/16” pyramid spikes are recommended and no spikes longer than 1/4" will be permitted except in the javelin and high jump, where 3/8” spikes may be used.  Athletes with spikes that do not meet these criteria will not be admitted to their event.

Hospitality                     There will be a hospitality tent set up on northeast end of the track.  We will have drinks, snacks and meals each day for all coaches and administrators.  You will need your credential to access the hospitality area.  Player hospitality will be near the finish line.

Media Relations          The BYU Track SID is Adrian Call.  Her office number is (801) 422-8999, her cell number is (801) 360-1481 and her e-mail address is track_sid@byu.edu.  Please contact Adrian or Jeff Reynolds (jeff_reynolds@byu.edu) for media credentials. A credential application is available online at the following link (Credential Appl) Media Packets can be picked up in the Media Relations Office (30 SFH) in advance during normal business hours or at the ticket entrance to the track complex.  We will have several phone lines and Ethernet connections available for credentialed media.  The press area will be at the end of the track, south of the finish line.  Post meet interviews will take place in the mix zone near the finish line.  Live results will be updated during the meet at www.ncaasports.com. Media requests for AP style post-meet results via e-mail can also be made to Adrian in advance.  Team SIDs are encouraged to mail media guides in advance to Adrian Call, Track SID, 30 SFH, Provo, UT 84602.  Please contact Adrian with any additional questions or special needs.

Merchandising            Championship merchandise will be available for purchase near the main entrance for the duration of the championship.

Parking                             All teams and spectators will park in the football stadium parking lots. Please refer to the campus map for the exact location. 

Participant Admission                    All student athletes, coaches and administrators can enter through the main entrance, the West gate, across the street from Pizza Hut.  You will need your credential to enter here gate.

Participant Seating  All student athletes can sit anywhere in the general admission sections of the bleachers.

Pole/Implement Storage       There is a secure location under the bleachers where implements can be stored.

Practice                            The Robison Track & Field Complex will be available for practice on Wednesday from 12:00 noon – 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  All events can practice simultaneously except for the Hammer, Discus and Javelin.  The Following practice schedule will be in effect for these events.

Relay Policy                   Each coach will declare one relay team from those on the qualified descending order list. That relay team’s performance will be used for seeding purposes. All other teams on the descending order list will be scratched.

The coach will declare a relay pool of six (6) athletes to include the four (4) who comprised the team that qualified and two (2) potential replacements. The two potential replacements may be any athletes already qualified to compete in the meet in other events or named alternate athletes not already in the meet.

Any four (4) athletes from this pool may run in any round of the relay competition at the regional meet.   

Relay cards must be completed by the coaches during the packet pick-up period.  Changes in relay teams must be reported to the Running Event Official during athlete check-in.  Please consult the NCAA Championship Handbook for regulations specific to the relay teams.

Results & Heat              Heat sheets for Friday will be available at the Mandatory Technical meeting on Thursday.  Friday’s results and Saturday’s heat sheets will be posted on www.byutrack.com as soon as they are available.

Rules                                   The 2006 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country Rules govern the administration and conduct of collegiate track and field meets. All collegiate meets shall be run in accordance with the NCAA false-start rule; however, student-athletes may qualify for the outdoor championships in meets conducted under International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) rules.

Sports Medicine         There will be a satellite training room in a large tent set up directly south of the main bleachers.  All basic needs can be accommodated in this satellite training room.  If you have any special needs, arrangements can be made for use of the Smith Fieldhouse or Student Athlete Building training rooms.  Please contact Jeff Hurst at (801) 422-2952, if you have any special needs.

Directions to the Clarence F. Robison Track & Field Complex

 

From the North          Heading south on I-15, get off the freeway at Exit No. 269 (University Parkway).

(Salt Lake City)           Turn left at the street light. Stay on this same road proceeding east until you reach the facilities. This road will take you past the University Mall in Orem and into Provo. The LaVell Edwards stadium is located on the corner of University Parkway and Canyon Road. The Robison Track and Field Complex is located just south of Edwards Stadium on the southeast corner of University Parkway and Canyon Road.

Optional routes include exiting I-15 at 800 North or Center Street in Orem, (thus avoiding the University Parkway exit which tends to have more traffic) traveling east toward the mountain and finally making a RIGHT turn onto Highway 189/University Avenue. From University Avenue, make a left at University Parkway (1650 North). The LaVell Edwards Stadium is located on the corner of University Parkway and Canyon Road. The Robison Track and Field Complex is located just south of Edwards Stadium on the southeast corner of University Parkway and Canyon Road.

From the South          Heading north on I-15, get off the freeway at Exit No. 263 (University Avenue) in

(St. George)                    Provo. Drive north on University Avenue until you reach University Parkway (1650 North). Turn right. Team parking for the NCAA West Region Championships will be in Lot 48.  Parking for Spectators will be in lots 45 & 49.  These lots will not be ticketed during the Championship.

 

 

Regional Championship Meet Information

Facility Information

The 400 meter track consists of nine 42-inch lanes with 85 meter straight-aways and 118-meter curves. The Mondo Super X track was resurfaced in the summer of 2004.

The steeple chase water jump has an inside location with the same surface of the track.  Barrier height is 36 inches for the men and 30 inches for the women. The length of the water jump is 12 feet for both men and women.

All field events are contested on the stadium infield. 

The high jump area has a large runway allowing for jumping from any direction.  The horizontal jumps are staged on single runways along the west straight-away.  The distance between the boards and pits are 4 feet for the long jump and 41 feet for the triple jump.  The long jump and triple jump runaways are 180 feet long and 48 inches wide.

 The Pole Vault is also staged along the west straight-away.  The runway is 200 feet long and 48 inches wide.

The Javelin runway is 150 feet long.

 

Regional Championship Meet Information

Athlete Flow

Running Events:       

1.       Athlete check-in is at the pavilion at the north end of the track complex. 

2.      All competitors can start checking in at the pavilion 60 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled event and must be checked in 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.

3.      Athletes must report and remain in the check in area 15 minutes before the scheduled start of their event.  Any athlete not in the check in area at this time may be disqualified.

4.      Athletes will be escorted from Athlete Check-in to either the starting line.

5.      Athletes will be called to the starting line by the starter for each race. 

6.      Once at the starting line, baskets will be available for athletes to place their sweats in.  These baskets will be transported to the mix zone at the south end of the track to be available for pickup at the conclusion of each event.

7.      Athletes need to exit the track at the south end once the race is complete to pick up their sweats and to be available for media interviews.

8.      After the finals, the top 5 finishers must report to the awards peristyle for recognition.

Jumping Events:

1.       Athlete check-in is at the pavilion at the north end of the track complex.

a.       Pole Vault – Check-in for all vaulters will begin at the pavilion 2 hours before the start of their event.  Vaulters will need to report in again 90 minutes before the scheduled start of their event at which time they will be escorted to the venue. Jumpers will be allowed on the venue 90 minutes before the start of the event for warm-ups.  Before the start of the flight, the athletes will be introduced.  Vertical events will jump Five Alive.  At the conclusion of the final, the top 5 finishers must report to the peristyle near the finish line for recognition. 

b.      High Jumps – Check-in for all jumpers will begin at the pavilion 2 hours before the start of their event. Jumpers will need to report in again 60 minutes before the scheduled start of their event at which time they will be escorted to the venue. Jumpers will be allowed on the venue 60 minutes before the start of the event for warm-ups.  Before the start of the flight, the athletes will be introduced.  Vertical events will jump Five Alive.  At the conclusion of the final, the top 5 finishers must report to the peristyle near the finish line for recognition.

c.       Horizontal Jumps – Check in for all jumpers will begin at the pavilion 2 hours before the start of their event. Jumpers will need to report in again 60 minutes before the scheduled start of their event at which time they will be escorted to the venue. Jumpers will be allowed on the venue 60 minutes before the start of the event for warm-ups.  The final 15 minutes of the warm-up period will be limited to the competitors in the first flight.  All competitors that are not in the first flight will be escorted back to the pavilion 15 minutes before the start of the first flight.  Each subsequent flight will be escorted back to the venue at the conclusion of the previous flight.  They will receive 10 minutes to warm-up prior to their flight.  Before the start of each flight, the athletes will be introduced.  At the conclusion of each flight, athletes will be escorted to the mix zone.  Athletes that qualify for finals from each flight must report to the pavilion for re-admittance to the venue.

d.      Finals – At the conclusion of the final, the top 5 finishers must report to the peristyle near the finish line for recognition.  All other athletes will need to go to the mix zone to be available for the media interviews.

Throwing Events

1.       Athlete check-in is at the pavilion at the north end of the track complex.

2.      Check-in for all throwers will begin at the pavilion 2 hours before the start of their event. Throwers will need to report in again 60 minutes before the scheduled start of their event at which time they will be escorted to the venue. Throwers will be allowed on the venue 60 minutes before the start of the event for warm-ups.  Before the start of each heat, the athletes will be introduced.  At the conclusion of each flight, athletes will be escorted to the mix zone.  Athletes that qualify for finals from each flight must report to the pavilion for re-admittance to the venue.

3.      Impounded implements that have been certified for competition will be delivered to the event site 90 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the event.

4.      The final 10 minutes of the warm-up period will be limited to the competitors in the first flight. Each subsequent flight will receive ten minutes to warm up prior to their flight

5.      At the conclusion of the final, the top 5 finishers must report to the peristyle near the finish line for recognition.  All other athletes will need to go to the mix zone to be available for the media interviews.
