BYU and the state of Utah are in need of certified track and field officials!
In conjunction with the USATF/Utah Track and Field Officials, we are hosting an Official's Certification and Training Clinic on Wednesday evening. At BYU, each year we host at least one cross country meet, two indoor track meets, and four outdoor track meets. Every few years there are opportunities to work championship meets that we host. We have hosted the state high school meet each year for many years now. This last month we hosted the NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championships at East Bay Golf Course. We hosted the NCAA West Region Track and Field Championships in 2006. Great meets do not happen without capable officials. It would be great to have additional officials to assist with hosting our meets. UVU also hosts track meets and needs officials. There are a large number of high school meets in the area that always need officials. There are many opportunities to officiate and serve.
What is available?
- Prospective officials can become certified,
- Newer officials can gain additional training,
- A current official can upgrade their level; (an official who has the required
experience may take the appropriate test to upgrade their rating level from
Association level to National level, or from National level to Master level.)
- Experienced officials will be assigned as a mentor to a new official or to an
official that would like to expand their areas of expertise to a new area.
This is also a chance to share experiences and get to know other
officials in the area.
What is needed?
This is an excellent opportunity to become certified.
Everyone is grouped together to review the rules and take the open-book test,
making the collaborative process very easy and a lot of fun.
Cost?
There are two expenses for track and field officials. Dues are $15.
In addition, insurance is provided by the required membership in USA Track and
Field, which is $30.
Benefits?
Officials receive a stipend each time that they work a BYU track meet, making it
easy to recoup the cost of certification.
